If you are hearing running in the ceiling during the day it is usually grey squirrels; scratching and gliding thumps after dark is usually flying squirrels, and they are almost never alone.
Raccoons and Opossums
Barns, equipment sheds and open crawl spaces give raccoons and opossums exactly what they want — a dry, dark space with no door. On outbuildings the fix is usually structural, because a shed that was never sealed will keep taking animals no matter how many we trap out of it.
